Daniel de Grammont
politician (1116-1196)
Who they were
A Cistercian abbot of the 12th century, Daniel was born in 1115 into a noble family from Grammont in eastern Flanders. He entered the abbey of Notre-Dame de Cambron, founded in 1148 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, and became its abbot in 1164; the trust he earned brought many donations that allowed him to finish building the monastery.
Pope Lucius III entrusted him with important missions, and Baldwin V, Count of Hainaut, called on him to restore peace among neighbouring princes, sending him to the assemblies of Péronne and Arras and having him assist in preparations for the Crusade. Daniel died on 20 January 1197, the first abbot to be buried in the chapter house, and is remembered on that date in the Cistercian menology.
