Cecilio Vega Domínguez
Who they were
Cecilio Vega Domínguez was born on 8 September 1913 in Villamor de Órbigo, León, the son of poor farm labourers with nine children. Drawn to religious life from childhood, he entered the novitiate of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate on 14 August 1930, made his first oblation in 1931 at Pozuelo de Alarcón near Madrid, and his perpetual oblation on 23 December 1934, going on to receive minor orders as he approached the diaconate.
When revolutionary militia stormed the Oblate house at Pozuelo de Alarcón on 22 July 1936, burning its sacred furnishings and arresting all 38 religious there, Cecilio refused his father's pleas to save himself and stayed with his community. At dawn on 24 July 1936, after two days of imprisonment, he was taken with six confreres to Casa de Campo and shot, aged 23, on the threshold of the diaconate. He was beatified with Francesco Esteban Lacal and twenty other Oblate companions by Pope Benedict XVI on 17 December 2011.
The miracles
