Catalina Solaguti
Feast: 1 January (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
A Mercedarian nun at the monastery of Jesus and Mary in Orozco, Spain, Catalina (Caterina) Solaguti was the first nun of that house to be honoured as a saint, remembered for a life full of virtue and for dying in the odour of sanctity. Little else is recorded of her: her birth date and other details are unknown, but her dedication to her vocation and to the Mercedarian order, founded to ransom Christians held captive, is remembered.
She was never formally recognised through beatification or canonisation as the Church understands those processes today; the title "Blessed" reflects instead the level of pious devotion given her within Mercedarian tradition. Her order keeps her feast every year on 1 January.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: she has been honoured as blessed since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
First nun of the Mercedarian convent of Jesus and Mary in Orozco to be honoured as a saint of the house; feast kept by the order on 1 January.
The cause
The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.
