Bonaventura Badoardo de Peraga
Italian theologian
Feast: 5 November (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Bonaventure Baduario was born at Peraga, near Padua, joined the Augustinian friars young, studied at Paris and was among the first to teach theology at Bologna. He wrote treatises and commentaries and was a close friend of the poet Petrarch, whose funeral sermon he preached.
He became prior general of his order in 1377 and the next year the first Augustinian friar made a cardinal. Defending the rights of the Church brought him into conflict with his kinsman Francis of Carrara, ruler of Padua, and he was killed by an arrow while crossing the Tiber in Rome; the killer was never found. Butler calls his claim to the title Blessed a little doubtful, though his order honoured him as a martyr.
