Bertrand of Grandselve
abbot and saint († 1149)
Feast: 23 October (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
St. Bertrand, a Cistercian abbot of Grandselve near Toulouse, was one of the bright luminaries in the ecclesiastical firmament of his age and not only led his own monks to the summit of perfection by word and example but exercised a beneficent influence far beyond the walls of his monastery. So complete was his detachment from the world that he rarely spoke of worldly affairs or even of his relatives. He died about 1170 and was venerated as a Saint ever since that time.
