Bartolomeo Aiutamicristo da Pisa
Italian Roman Catholic monk and blessed
Feast: 28 January (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Bartolomeo Aiutamicristo, a Camaldolese monk, came from an ancient and noble family of Pisa. He entered the Camaldolese monastery of San Frediano as a lay brother, and his holiness of life was confirmed by remarkable miracles both before and after his death on 28 January 1224, the date on which he is commemorated by the Roman Martyrology and the Camaldolese menology.
He was buried in the monastery church beneath an altar raised in his honour, later moved under the high altar to make his veneration easier; a fire in 1675 badly damaged the church and destroyed most of his previously incorrupt body, and the few remaining fragments were placed in the sacristy. Pope Pius IX confirmed his veneration in 1857 and extended it to the whole Camaldolese order and the archdiocese of Pisa; his liturgical feast is kept on 12 April.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
Camaldolese lay brother of Pisa venerated for miracles before and after his death in 1224; veneration confirmed by Pius IX in 1857.
The cause
The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.
