Who they were

Avelino Martínez de Arenzana Candela, in the world Avelinus Alfonsus Iosephus, was born at Barcelona on 31 December 1898; he entered the Hospitaller Order of St John of God on 1 January 1934 and received the religious habit on 18 September of that year. He is named in the decree on the martyrdom of Mauricio Íñiguez de Heredia Alzóla and twenty-three companions of the Order, killed between 1936 and 1937, and he was beatified on 13 October 2013 by Pope Francis.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

He had worn the habit of the Order for less than two years when the persecution took his life.

The cause

The cause continues. No postulation address is published here yet. Favours received through this person’s intercession, and offers of help, are best sent to the religious order or congregation they belonged to, or to the diocese where the cause was opened; either will pass them to the postulation.

A miracle approved by the Holy See is needed for the next step. If you know the postulation’s own page, tell us and it will be added here.
