Arcadius of Mauretania
saint and martyr
Feast: 12 January (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
At Caesarea in Mauretania, in present-day Algeria, Saint Arcadius, martyr: during the persecution he lived in hiding, but when a relative was captured in his place, he gave himself up to the judge of his own accord and, having refused to sacrifice to the gods, after suffering terrible tortures, he crowned his life with martyrdom.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 12 January as a martyr of Caesarea in Mauretania who gave himself up when a relative was taken in his place.
