Antoni Ulma
Polish martyr
Who they were
Antoni Ulma, known as Antoś, was born on 6 June 1941 in Markowa, Poland, the fifth of the six children of Józef and Wiktoria Ulma, farmers of the parish of Santa Dorotea. During the German occupation his parents sheltered eight Jews fleeing persecution in their home.
Betrayed to the German police, the family was murdered on 24 March 1944: the Jews they were sheltering were killed first, then Józef and Wiktoria, and finally the six children, including three-year-old Antoni, along with the baby Wiktoria was about to give birth to. The whole family - parents and seven children - was beatified as martyrs on 10 September 2023 in Markowa, under Pope Francis.
