Who they were
Commemoration of Saint Anthony, monk, who, a man distinguished for courtesy and learning, after leading a solitary life, withdrew in old age to the monastery of Lérins in Provence, where he fell asleep devoutly in the Lord.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 28 December as a hermit who withdrew in old age to the monastery of Lérins.
