Andrés de Palazuelo
Spanish author
Feast: 31 July (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Fr Andrea da Palazuelo (Miguel Francisco González González) was born on 8 May 1883, and at sixteen entered the Capuchin Friars Minor at Bilbao on 31 July 1899 - the same date, 37 years later, on which he would be killed. He made perpetual profession in 1903 and was ordained priest in 1908, going on to teach at the Capuchin house of studies at El Pardo in Madrid, then at León and Bilbao, before returning to Madrid in 1920 as provincial archivist and chronicler, a post he held almost continuously until his death.
A provincial definitor, writer and much sought-after spiritual director, he was forced to leave his Madrid convent on 20 July 1936 during the turmoil of the Popular Front, taking lodging with other religious. Arrested from that lodging on 30 July while insisting he had done no wrong to anyone, he was killed that same night purely for being a religious and a priest; his body was found the next morning in San Isidro park. He was beatified with numerous fellow martyrs on 13 October 2013 in Tarragona.
