Amelia of Girona
Christian martyr
Feast: 5 January (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Almost nothing is known of Amelia's life. She belongs to a large group of Christian martyrs killed at Girona in Catalonia during the 4th century, recorded in an ancient breviary of Girona that places the whole list under the persecution of Diocletian. In 1336 the bishop of Girona, Arnau de Campredon, discovered the martyrs' relics and dedicated an altar to them in the city's cathedral.
Over the centuries these martyrs have been commemorated in groups on different dates, and while a few of their names carry small additional details in the Hieronymian Martyrology and other documents, Amelia's name appears only in the long list itself, with nothing more recorded about her.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: she has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
One of a large group of Christian martyrs killed at Girona under Diocletian's persecution, whose relics were found in 1336; feast 5 January.
