Alfons z Cuzca
Feast: 22 September (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Alfonso da Cusco was a lay brother of the Order of Mercy (the Mercedarians), remembered by tradition as living in the Mercedarian convent of San Juan de LetrĂ¡n in Arequipa, Peru. Almost nothing reliable is known of his birth, family, or the date of his death; tradition credits him with a life of particular holiness and a reputation as a miracle worker, and says he foreknew the day of his death.
These details come only from later devotional writings, and no papal act of beatification has been found for him: his title of "blessed" rests on Mercedarian devotional memory rather than a formal modern process. His feast, tied to the house at Arequipa, is kept on 22 September.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as blessed since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
Mercedarian lay brother of Arequipa (Peru), venerated as a miracle worker through Order tradition though no papal act of beatification has been found; feast 22 September.
