Aldemaro di Capua
Feast: 24 March (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Aldemar the Wise was born at Capua and educated at Monte Cassino, where he became a deacon. Princess Aloara of Capua made him director of her convent, and when his miracles led the abbot to recall him, a quarrel followed; to end it Aldemar left for Boiano, where one of his companions tried to kill him with a crossbow and wounded himself instead.
He then built the monastery of Bocchignano in the Abruzzi and several others that remained under his direction. He loved animals and would not let a swarm of bees nesting in a cupboard be disturbed. He died of fever while visiting his houses, about 1080.
The miracles
There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
An eleventh-century monk of Monte Cassino and founder of monasteries in the Abruzzi.
