Adalgisius of Novara
Feast: 7 October (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Saint Adalgiso was bishop of Novara in the mid-9th century, during the reorganisation of the Church in northern Italy under Carolingian rule. His activity is known mainly through documents on the property of the Novara church: in 840 he obtained important concessions from Emperor Lothair I for the episcopal see, organised the cathedral clergy, and in 848 assigned further property to the canons of San Gaudenzio.
Recent studies place him among bishops of Carolingian formation with ties to the area beyond the Alps. His liturgical memory is attested on 7 October in the Acta Sanctorum, while the diocese of Novara today keeps it on 5 October; his relics are venerated in the basilica of San Gaudenzio.
