Sergius, son of Tiberius, came from Antioch, was educated in Sicily and was ordained by St Leo II. When two rival candidates were put forward in 687, the clergy and people set both aside and chose him.
He baptised King Caedwalla of the West Saxons, supported St Wilfrid and St Aldhelm, and consecrated St Willibrord bishop and sent him to the Frisians. He refused to accept the Council in Trullo of 692, and when the Emperor Justinian II sent an officer to arrest him the people of Rome protected him. He added the Agnus Dei to the Mass.
He is honoured by the Church as Saint. Read his page in the dictionary of saints.
