John was a Syrian, the son of Cyriacus. As a deacon he was one of Rome's representatives at the Third Council of Constantinople and brought its documents home in 682. He was the first pope in some time consecrated without waiting for imperial confirmation.
He won tax relief for the Church's estates in Sicily and Calabria from the Emperor Constantine IV, placed the see of Torres in Sardinia directly under Rome, and was generous to the clergy and the poor. He was ill for much of his year as pope.
