Leo was a Sicilian, the son of Paul, described by his biographer as just and learned. He was elected soon after St Agatho's death but not consecrated for a year and seven months, probably because of negotiations with the emperor over papal elections.
He confirmed the Third Council of Constantinople and made its decrees known in the West, writing to the bishops of Spain, who accepted them at Toledo in 684. He secured the end of Ravenna's claim to independence from Rome, and moved relics of martyrs from the catacombs into a church he built for them.
He is honoured by the Church as Saint. Read his page in the dictionary of saints.
