Severinus, a Roman and the son of Abienus, was elected in October 638. The emperor withheld confirmation for over a year and a half, demanding that he sign the Ecthesis, a statement that Christ had only one will, and the exarch's men plundered the Lateran palace to pressure him.
He refused to sign, and once he was finally consecrated in 640 he declared that Christ has two natures and so two wills and two natural operations. He reigned barely two months and built the apse of old St Peter's, where he was buried.
