Boniface was a Neapolitan who succeeded Deusdedit after a vacancy of more than a year. The Liber Pontificalis calls him the mildest of men, chiefly distinguished by his great love for the clergy.
He made rules on the right of sanctuary, wills and the duties of acolytes. Bede records his care for the English Church: he sent the pallium to Justus of Canterbury and wrote to King Edwin of Northumbria urging him to become a Christian, and to Queen Ethelberga encouraging her to win him over.
