Anastasius was a native of Rome, elected in November 496. He reigned for just under two years, and little is recorded of him.
He kept the demand that the name of Acacius of Constantinople be struck from the lists read at the altar, but accepted that the sacraments Acacius had administered were valid, which displeased many in Rome. He also condemned the opinion that the soul is passed on from parents to child. He is one of the less-known popes of his century.
