Anacletus, also called Cletus or Anencletus, was the second successor of St Peter as Bishop of Rome. Some old lists treat Cletus and Anacletus as two men, but most scholars hold they are the same person. Almost nothing is recorded of his life beyond his ordaining a number of priests.
He is remembered as the third pope and is named, as Cletus, in the Roman Canon of the Mass. Tradition holds that he died a martyr, perhaps around the year 91. Little is known of him.
He is honoured by the Church as Saint. Read his page in the dictionary of saints.
