Goffredo Castiglioni, from Milan, was a nephew of Urban III and probably a Cistercian; Gregory IX made him a cardinal. He was elected in October 1241, when the papacy's struggle with Frederick II was at its height.
He died after a reign of about sixteen days, one of the shortest in history, and is little known. His death was followed by a vacancy of more than a year and a half.
