Sicco was a Roman who had been married before taking orders and had three sons, all of whom later became clergy. After the death of Sylvester II the noble John Crescentius took control of Rome, and Sicco owed his election in 1003 to him. Older lists sometimes number him John XVIII.
He reigned for less than five months, and nothing of what he did as pope has come down to us. He is among the least known of all the popes.
