Marinus was a Roman and cardinal of St Cyriacus, one of the good men placed on the papal throne by Alberic, Prince of the Romans, who would let them do nothing without his leave. He reigned from the autumn of 942 until the spring of 946.
He worked quietly for reform, abroad through his legates and at home in person, and encouraged the monastic renewal led by Cluny. He is also said to have repaired the basilicas of Rome and cared for the poor.
