Leo was a Roman, the son of Christopher, who had been chief minister under John VIII, and was Cardinal-Priest of St Susanna when he was elected. He was pope for about seven months in the second half of 928; the exact dates are uncertain.
The one surviving act of his reign settles church boundaries in Dalmatia: he gave the pallium to the Archbishop of Split and told the bishops there to obey him and keep to their own dioceses. Most writers say he was buried in St Peter's.
