Soter led the Church of Rome for about eight years in the 160s and 170s. Tradition says he came from Fondi in southern Italy. Nothing more is known of his life.
He is remembered for his generosity: St Dionysius of Corinth wrote to thank him for the alms he sent to churches and to Christians condemned to the mines, and for his fatherly letters. He shares his feast with St Caius on 22 April.
He is honoured by the Church as Saint. Read his page in the dictionary of saints.
